Poi & Tī Rākau Workshop - Information Page

Thank you so much for booking us in for a visit with your Kura or Rōpū/Group.

A huge ngā mihi aroha to you all for your support! We are SO looking forward to having a kanikani while we waiata with your tamariki!

the lo-down

Below you will find information that is relevant to our visit, however, if you have a question about something not covered below, please send us a message, HERE.

🎶 The workshop itself

Here’s a YouTube link to a playlist with a few songs that are likely to be included in our workshop. Feel free to play this on repeat for your tamariki, before and after our visit.

The workshop will be 75-minutes long, and is intended as a wee intro to tī rākau and poi. We will start the workshop with some warm-up waiata. Tamariki will then use tī rākau in a rhythm waiata and will have the opportunity to workshop in a small group, some actions of their own. They will also learn a few simple poi actions. They will finish the workshop by putting it all together in a mini performance that can be recorded, if you’d like (please let us know in advance), so that they can continue the learning and maybe even perform it on their own to their peers, ie. in a school assembly performance.

If time allows, tamariki can colour in the design to cover their tī rākau, but if we run out of time, it will be in a take-home pack for them to complete at home, or later in class. A couple of tables set-up in the room to accommodate this would be great, please.

If space allows, we’d love for tamariki to be seated in a semi-circle, but kei te pai if that’s not possible. This format ensures all tamariki are able to see the actions, etc, however, we do understand that sometimes the spaces aren’t wide enough to allow for that.

Siu and I would love a chair each to sit on, please. After years (approx. 17!) of doing this mahi and sitting on our knees many times a day (which I’m sure kaiako will understand!), they started complaining (our knees, that is! lol!) so a chair each will be awesomely appreciated – ngā mihi!

👫🏾The ideal group size

The ideal size for this workshop is up to 30 tamariki.

The intention is for an intimate group setting that allows us to really connect with the tamariki, and to allow us to split up into small groups, where tamariki can feel comfortable enough to contribute their thoughts and ideas.

It will also hopefully allow some time towards the end to colour-in their tī rākau covers.

🥢Props – poi and tī rākau

We will provide the tī rākau and poi for the workshop – one set of each, per child.

Tī rākau are rolled up magazines, covered in white paper. They are yours to keep, after the workshop, either as a school set, or for the tamariki to take home for themselves. We will provide a take-home pack for each child that includes a cover sheet for each rākau pair, that tamariki can colour-in at the end, if time allows, as well as instructions on how to seal them with duraseal (included in the pack) once the cover has been applied.

There is an option to purchase poi off us directly, for $15/pair. Our poi are handmade by our Mum and Aunty, and are made specifically for the hands and use of younger tamariki, using mostly recycled materials sourced from local secondhand stores, or Creative Junk. Therefore, each poi is uniquely individual. They will not look the same, as it depends on the fabrics sourced, so colours and patterns will vary.

The poi tail/cord varies from 20-26cm long, but can be customised to a specific length (ie. shorter than 20cm), if you’d like. We don’t make them longer than 26cm.

Please note: when ordering poi, we require a minimum of 4 weeks to complete orders, even though, for small orders (less than 50 pairs), we are generally able to do in less time, however, we will do our best to get them made up as soon as possible, but large orders are likely to take a little longer.

Timeliness

We endeavour to arrive about 15 minutes prior to our starting time, as it doesn’t take us long to set-up.

If we have a full schedule, we are confident that we’re able to get to each Centre/School on time. However, there is always the possibly that we hit delays, in which case, we will contact you to let you know (as soon as possible) that we’re running late, so, thank you in advance for your understanding.

As it will be an afternoon time slot that will be finishing at 2.15pm, we will not be able to linger to chat with everybody as we normally would like to, as will need to head-off soon after packing up, to do school pick-ups. In lieu of this, we will add some colouring-in sheets to their packs to enjoy later. We will also end the session by inviting tamariki up for a stamp on their hand, which is a lovely quick way to meet and greet them all, individually, and is usually the highlight of our visit!  ❤️

🅿️ Parking spot

If it’s not too much trouble, it would really help us out to have a carpark allocated for us, near the entrance, please. This will definitely contribute to a smoother transition between each visit, if we have a full schedule, and may even allow a couple minutes extra to have a quick kōrero with you all.

📖 Ordering our books and merch!

If you are not already aware, we have a 5-book ‘Rainbow Collection’ of bilingual children’s pukapuka (click on this link for more info about them), based on five of our original waiata, so tamariki can sing along while checking out the illustrations. Our books are printed here in Ōtautahi/Christchurch and were created by a mostly Ōtautahi-based team of wāhine (our graphic designer is Auckland-based, but we don’t hold that against her! haha!).

If anybody is interested in purchasing any (along with any merch), we would love to offer them to you at a discounted $20 per book (normally $22). Just click on THIS LINK to head to an order form that you can fill out and email back to us and we can either send it out to you, for $8 postage, or bring your order with us, on the day – too easy!

We may take along a few extras with us in case anybody decides to purchase them on the day, and we have an eftpos device, although pre-purchasing is the preferred option (due to potential time constraints).

🧾 Invoicing

If you would like an invoice, please let us know and I will send one through, via Xero.

If you decide to order any of our books and would like them added to the invoice, I can do that, and if you need me to add a purchase order number to the invoice, please send that through as soon as possible.

The workshop is $550*+ gst.

* travel fees apply, where relevant.

📸 Photos, videos and social media

You are welcome to take photos and video footage of us performing, during the session, or a group photo afterward. We are happy for you to tag us in any social media posts, also [FB: @LoopyTunesPreschoolMusic and IG: @loopytuneskidsmusic ].

We will always ask permission before posting or re-posting on our own social media pages, if tamariki are in any of the photos.

Also, we like to take a selfie of ourselves and the School’s sign as we leave so will tag you in this post at the end of the day.  😊

🗣 Feedback

We would LOVE any feedback from you about our visit, so we try to flick through a wee survey after our visit (just a heads up!).  👍
